Math Club (4-6)

Grade: 4 - 6 Min: 4 Max: 15 (15 seats remaining)

Min Assistants: 1 Max Assistants: 1 (1 seat remaining)

Description:

"Math is seeing patterns, solving puzzles, using logic, finding ways to connect disparate ideas, and so much more." In Math Club, we will play around with all these elements through games, projects, activities, and non-routine problems that require deep thinking. Students will reinforce their comfort with the basic operations of arithmetic, as well as delving into fractions, decimals, and basic geometry.

Homework:

In general, no homework. Students may be invited to explore concepts we encounter more deeply - share a game with a sibling, draw pictures to discover more patterns, etc. - but this is an invitation, not an assignment. I may occasionally email a link to a video for parents to share with students; these will usually be 10 minutes or less.

Special Projects:

None.

Supplies/Curriculum to be Provided by Student:

Paper, graph paper, pencils (mechanical preferred), colored pencils, compass and protractor, ruler, scissors

Material Fees:

$15 first semester, $10 second semester. Venmo: @JaneHeinze

Skills Needed:

Students need to be comfortable with addition, subtraction, and basic multiplication with some exposure to division. We will work together and discuss ideas, so students need to be able to give constructive feedback in a positive way. Students should also be prepared to have their thinking challenged and look at old ideas in new ways, so bring an open-minded attitude about what math might involve.

Prerequisites:

Come ready to explore, play, and learn. While this class is listed for 4-6th graders, 3rd graders who are working above grade level and are comfortable with addition, subtraction, and basic multiplication and division are welcome to join us.
