Applied Sciences of Homesteading

We will be learning about the sciences involved in many homesteading skills. For example, chemistry in fermentation and soapmaking, biology of farm animals and plants, and microbiology in fermentation, sterilization and contanimation. Every week will include a large focus on hands on skills of Homesteading skills including but not limited to making sourdough bread, brewing kombucha, fermenting vegetables, soap making, canning, cheese making, yogurt making, gardening, and animal Husbandry (including incubating chicks).
Light weekly homework will include some small reading assignments and video watching to prepare for class.
Supplies to be provided by students: Sourdough Unit (Sept.): mixing bowl, mixing fork, sterile jar, bread pan; optional: kitchen scale, bannenton basket Kombucha Unit (Oct.): sterilized jars to grow scobe, ½ gallon jars, swing top bottles Soap Making Unit (Nov.): soap molds or lined boxes, designated bowls (not metal) and stirring utensils (would not be able to be used for cooking after soap making), optional: immersion blenders (dedicated to soap making), soap colorants and scents/essential oils Canning Unit: small and medium canning jars with new lids; optional: canning pots and canning supplies Gardening Unit (Feb.): clean small plastic pots, optional: seed trays, grow lights, seeds Animal Husbandry (Mar.): optional: supplies to raise chicks we hatch in class
