Description:

Do you wonder if your student really comprehends the books they read? Many times students can answer simple questions about a book but miss the deeper meaning. This class will delve deeper into literature through homework and class discussion. We will have an exciting mix of books that will expose the students to other cultures, history and are adventure-filled as well as entertaining. Because of the variety of reading abilities, parents can choose to have the student read to themselves, a parent read, or listen to an audio book. Each week we will have class discussions pertaining to the book and go over the new vocab words they encounter in these great classics. This class has different books each year...Take a look!

Homework:

Homework for each week will be to read 4-5 chapters per week. The books will range from upper 4th grade reading to 6th grade. An important aspect of the class are our class discussions that are based on the homework. The homework consists of a small amount of vocab and short answer questions. Depending on the student's ability, they can either do the homework independently or they can dictate their answers for the parent to fill out. This will help all students be prepared for our class discussions. Homework will be checked each week for credit.

Special Projects:

During the year, we will have book projects for each of the books we are reading. These book projects are fun and they encourage the student to use their creative side to show their understanding of the book. I offer many choices to pick from so that every student can do a project they would enjoy doing. Students will present those projects in front of the class.

Supplies/Curriculum to be Provided by Student:

Parents will need to supply the books. The library is a great option or they can be purchased through Amazon or other online book retailers. Thriftbooks.com and abebooks.com are great resources and have great prices on used books. This year's books will be: The Big Wave, Family Under the Bridge, Caddie Woodlawn, Island of the Blue Dolphins, By the Great Horn Spoon, The Winged Watchman and The Golden Goblet. Students will also need access to a dictionary for weekly vocabulary definitions. (An online dictionary is fine.)
