Lego Physics (2-3)
Grade: 2 - 3 Min: 4 Max: 12 (Student Max Reached)
Min Assistants: 1 Max Assistants: 2 (Assistant Max Reached)
Waitlist: 5 positions available
Basic physics concept will be taught in class that include simple machines, inertia, conservation of energy, molecular energy, pressure, density, surface tension, capillary action, and a whole lot more. We will explore everything from windshield wipers, rockets and ratchets, to cogs and cranes and then put it all together with fun LEGO projects. Some examples of projects are a balloon powered car and submarines. Short movies on "THE WAY THINGS WORK" based off the book by David Macaulay will be viewed to help understand the physics concept being taught. While most of the projects remain the same each year, I encourage a student who has previously taken this class to join us again as physics concepts can be abstract and take time to fully understand.
Occasionally, I may have students finish a project at home and bring it back to class.
2 gallons of assorted LEGOs (5-10lbs.) Lots of loose bricks in various sizes are needed for building in class. Student will need small platform blocks approx. 2x2 and 2x4, long skinny pieces, Technics are great to include but not required (these are the LEGO pieces with the holes in them), and some straight building blocks. Broken sets are best for bigger variety. A great place to find an assortment of LEGOs is on E-bay or garage sales. Please bring your LEGOs in a container, similar to or Sterilite (16 1/2" L X 13" W X 6 5/8" H). A great place to get the bin is at Walmart. I do have LEGOs that were donated and can be loaned out for the year! Please contact me if needed and I would be more than happy to put that together. *LEGO bin & toolboxes need to be brought each week to co-op*
$45.00 for the year. I will be providing them with a small toolbox that will fit their special Legos in that I will be purchasing for the projects. Any unused fees will be returned. Venmo: @Tanya-Slater-7
None - Just a love to play with LEGOs, use imagination, build and create!
Willingness to learn and participate! We do our best to enforce our rule that the students are not allowed to trade LEGOs during class. Many sets belong to older siblings and we make a concerted effort to not let the students LEGOs get mixed with another students.
