Description:

Beginning Drawing will be a class for students who are interested in drawing, but don't know where to start or how to get comfortable working out pictures on paper. We will be working in a variety of mediums and surfaces, but the main focus here is to get comfortable with drawing from what we can see, rather than just what we imagine in our heads. We will be doing some demos and also working on shading and texture. Students should come prepared to draw every class day. Lessons will be brief and the majority of the time will be used to draw! For the first semester, I will be following the structure of "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. For the second semester, we will be diving into a couple other mediums and working with reference pictures for inspiration.

Homework:

The plan is to have no homework, however, if there is something that I feel needs to be worked on during the week, I may send some short assignments for students to do on their own time.

Special Projects:

After each topic we cover, I will have students create a finished piece that demonstrates their understanding of the material and/or topic we learned about. We will do these in class and choose one of these for each student to enter into the Spring Fair 2026. Depending on the time it takes to cover each topic, these projects may occur every three to five weeks and we will devote one or two class days to work on them.
