Current Events is taught through a Biblical lens and Christian worldview. In class we will be learning about the big moral issues of the day that impact our lives and the world around us. Each week we will be engaging in conversation after learning about our topic of the week by Professor and Apologist Dr. Sean McDowell. I believe our young adults must learn how to think Biblically and know how to address and engage their generation respectfully through the lens of the Gospel, the only truth. The goal of my class is for my students to be seekers of Biblical wisdom and truth and to help equip them to give an answer for the hope that they have in Jesus. (1 Peter 3:15)
Students will need to watch all the video podcasts to have a good understanding of the weekly topic. They will be required to take a full page of typed notes and answer the weekly questions. Students will be expected to come to class prepared to discuss the previous week's podcasts. I highly encourage parents to be involved in discussion with your child to help them process through what they're learning in class. I use a variety of teachers and pastors who hold a historical view of Christianity, a Biblical sexual ethic, and communicates truth and grace in a way that captures the hearts and minds of this generation. I know your students will be encouraged and challenged!
Throughout the year students we will have several short presentations in class. At the end of the year each student will present a final project that helps them discover how God has uniquely made them to impact the world around them. Our class will also have the opportunity to put our faith into action and raise money for a nonprofit that supports the dignity and values of human life that is made in the image of God. My current class did a bake sale and raffle and gave the proceeds to CareNet, A21 and Atlas Free and New Way Ministries.
Each student will need to purchase a copy of A Rebel’s Manifesto by Sean McDowell for the first week of school. Students will also need access to a computer with internet to watch the video podcasts assigned for each weekly topic. They will also need a personal email account to receive class emails and assignments.
$10 each semester fee for copies and fundraiser supplies- Our class will be participating in a charity bake sale that supports a Christian nonprofit that is serving the most vulnerable in our communities. The goal is to learn practical ways to make a difference and to put our faith into action. Venmo: @Ryan-Meline

We will cover some very difficult topics in this class such as abortion, pornography, anxiety and depression, teen substance abuse, human trafficking, identity, sexuality and many other heartbreaking injustices in our world. Students need to have a maturity level to process difficult topics and conversations with sensitivity, dignity and respect.
