Description:

Learn the most popular game ever invented! Chess develops spatial thinking, problem solving and builds focused concentration. Students will receive a one year Chesskid.com gold membership with class enrollment that will begin with chess basics and beginning tactics, and then progress through strategies for openings, defenses, and endings. Chess 1 is designed for the younger student or those who would like to learn chess at a slower progression than Chess 2. Classroom time will involve reinforcing concepts learned on Chesskid.com with board demonstrations, puzzles, group discussions, but most of all...PLAYING chess! Students will also learn chess variants, participate in puzzle challenges and in-class tournaments.

Homework:

Students will receive a one year Chesskid.com gold membership and will be a part of our online chess club. Chesskid.com is a great resource for learning chess and has a large library of videos and lessons available. This class will have light homework requirements that will take between 15-20 minutes online each week and will usually consist of a video demonstration and puzzle practice to reinforce what is being learned. Students are welcome to access additional lessons and play games online with classmates as desired at the parent's discretion.

Supplies/Curriculum to be Provided by Student:

Students should have access to a chess set AT HOME to practice and play on. Tournament chess sets can be purchased online for under $25.00. Chesshouse.com carries a variety of basic sets. Product E128 is a good deal and includes a bag for storing the chess mat and pieces for $23.00. Rainbow Resource also carries tournament chess sets (item #044853 for $21.99), but the carrying tube doesn't function as well as a carrying case. Again, this set would be to use AT HOME...please do NOT bring them to class as I will provide all classroom material and I don't want sets getting mixed up.

Material Fees:

First semester: $35. Second semester: $15. Fees cover Chesskid.com membership for 1 year, prizes, awards, and copies. Venmo: @Heather-Meredith-711
