Description:

Learn the most popular game ever invented! Chess develops spatial thinking, problem solving, and builds focused concentration. Chess 2 is designed for beginning students who are ready to tackle learning chess strategy at a faster pace and for returning students who want to continue learning and improving their chess game. Students will receive a one year Chesskid.com gold membership with class enrollment. This will allow them to utilize videos, lessons and puzzles on Chesskid.com to learn such things as how to build a pawn shield, create a fork with your knight, pin the rook, and skewer the queen - all on the way to checkmate! Students will also learn chess variants, participate in puzzle challenges, and in-class tournaments. The majority of class time will be spent PLAYING chess!

Homework:

Students will receive a one-year Chesskid.com gold membership and will be a part of our online chess club. Each week they will be assigned lessons on Chesskid.com that include videos, tutorials and exercises to test the knowledge learned. The information they acquire with the online lessons and workouts will help reinforce concepts and prepare them for class discussions and play. They will also do online puzzles and games to achieve levels as they progress through the curriculum. Homework requirements will typically take 30-45 minutes per week, but many students devote a few hours each week watching videos, practicing new concepts and challenging their classmates to games.

Supplies/Curriculum to be Provided by Student:

Students should have access to a chess set AT HOME to practice and play on. Tournament chess sets can be purchased online for under $25.00. Chesshouse.com carries a variety of basic sets. Product E128 is a good deal and includes a bag for storing the chess mat and pieces for $23.00. Rainbow Resource also carries tournament chess sets (item #044853 for $21.99), but the carrying tube doesn't function as well as a carrying case. Again, this set would be to use AT HOME...please do NOT bring them to class as I will provide all classroom material and I don't want sets getting mixed up.

Material Fees:

First semester: $35. Second semester: $15. Fees cover Chesskid.com membership for 1 year, prizes, awards, and copies. Venmo: @Heather-Meredith-711
