Min Assistants: 1 Max Assistants: 1 (Assistant Max Reached)

Description:

This rigorous high school course covers basic principles of chemistry and provides the student with an excellent foundation for college-level work. During class, we will concentrate on completing the labs and reviewing Study Guides. Time will also be devoted to lecture, discussion, and reinforcement activities. As the majority of class time will be spent on lab work, the bulk of the reading, studying and test taking will be done by the student during the week at home. Successful completion of this course results in one high school credit for science with a lab and a deeper appreciation for the wonder of God's creation. PARENT RESPONSIBILITY: Oversee completion of weekly homework assignments and monitor test-taking. Please note: This class is 1 1/2 hours long and starts at 8:00am!

Homework:

Students will complete an average of 5 hours of homework per week. Homework will include careful reading of the chapter, completing "Comprehension Check" and Review questions, taking module tests, and writing laboratory reports. Students or parents will correct "Comprehension Check" questions. The Review questions will be checked for completion and reviewed in class. Lab Reports and Tests will be graded by teacher or assistant. Completion of assigned work is mandatory for class participation. There will be no need to purchase the supplemental Solutions and Tests Manual, but if purchased the student should at no time have access to it, as this, more often than not, compromises understanding.

Special Projects:

A chemistry related science fair project will be required during second semester.

Supplies/Curriculum to be Provided by Student:

All students will need safety glasses, dish gloves or chemical resistant gloves, a scientific calculator, a lab notebook, a folder for completed work, colored pencils, paper, a pencil and pen. The curriculum will be Discovering Design With Chemistry by Dr. Jay Wile: ISBN:978-0-9962784-6-1 and the tests ISBN:978-0-9962784-7-8. www.rainbowresource.com and www.christianbook.com are great online sources that sell these books at a reduced price.

Material Fees:

$20 per semester

Skills Needed:

Math skills: Student must be proficient at rearranging algebraic equations to solve for an unknown variable, and must understand and be conversant with ratios and proportions, multiplication and division of fractions, percents, and unit conversions. Typically, this proficiency is achieved by the time a student has completed one year of an algebra course. Pre-algebra does not qualify as fulfilling this prerequisite. Study skills: Student must be disciplined and responsible for keeping up with assigned homework and submitting required work on time.
