Description:

This rigorous college-prep biology course provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general biology. Heavily emphasizing the vocabulary of biology, this course will provide the student with a strong background in the scientific method, the five-kingdom classification scheme, microscopy, biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular and Mendelian genetics, evolution, dissection, and ecosystems. It also provides a complete survey of the five kingdoms in Creation. Students who take and understand this course will be very well-prepared for a university sciences. Successful completion of the course results in high school science credit with a lab. Class time will be spent in lecture, module review and labs.

Homework:

Students should anticipate at least 5 hours/week of homework including reading, lab reports and chapter work, as well as module exams taken at home under the direct supervision of a parent. Students will grade their own "On Your Own' activities, while lab reports, module exams and study guides will be corrected by TAs and/or the teacher.

Special Projects:

The students will complete a 3-D cell model in the first semester. There are no required second semester projects, however, students may elect to participate in the science fair for extra credit.

Supplies/Curriculum to be Provided by Student:

Exploring Creation in Biology 2nd edition (ISBN 978-1-932012-54-5) and Biology 2nd edition Solutions and Test Manual (ISBN 978-1-932012-55-2). There is an audio textbook available that may help your student process if they are an auditory learner (ISBN 978-1-932012-65-1). Also required: 3-ring-binder devoted to this course, pencils and colored pencils. A camera will also help your student with pictures of lab dissections to process at home.

Material Fees:

Skills Needed:

Student must be ready to read course material at home to gain understanding. Students will be expected to be diligent workers at home and complete assigned tasks (vocabulary lists, OYOs, lab reports and tests) on time. This class moves at a rapid pace and students should anticipate hard work.
